Bristol-born fine artist Michele Curtis presents this series of portraits celebrating Bristol’s Afro-Caribbean soundsystem pioneers.
It’s the next instalment in Michele’s ongoing project Iconic Black Bristolians, an umbrella name for a mix of shows that aim to educate and inspire the public about Bristol’s Afro-Caribbean community, remembering and capturing the legacy of key contributors in the multicultural arena. Following her first portraits exhibition in July 2014, Michele embarked on The Seven Saints of St Pauls, a two-year project celebrating first-generation figureheads via larger-than-life murals on prominent exterior walls of St Pauls.
Curtis’ new project is an exhibition of portraits of creative musical forces from the second generation diaspora who have entertained music lovers through the St Pauls Carnival sound system culture. The exhibition features over 20 portraits and biographies of sound system influencers and pioneers of the 1980s and 1990s, including faces from the legendary Smith & Mighty, Wild Bunch and City Rockas among others. They’ll be exhibited to a soundtrack of original sound system mixes.
