Sapphic Sundays: Karate and Coffee at The Island

A event held at The Island on Sunday 2nd November. The event starts at 11:15.

Sapphic Sundays x Bristol Women's Karate

Learn self-defence and meet other queer women along the way! The session begins with a karate taster class from 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM at The Island Dance Studio, Bridewell St, Bristol BS1 2QD. No prior experience is needed—just bring comfortable clothes (no zips or buttons please) and a sense of curiosity!

We will cover:

How to punch, kick, and strike with power

Soft skills for self-defence, like using your voice

Pair drills, including defending against grabs and holds

Afterwards, we’ll head to Dareshack, Vintry Building, Wine Street, Bristol BS1 2BD for coffee/light lunch, giving everyone a chance to connect, chat, and relax in a welcoming queer women’s space.

Come for the movement, stay for the community!

About Sapphic Sundays:
Sapphic Sundays is a weekly space for single, professional queer women. Not a dating event—but not not a dating event.

About Bristol Women's Karate:
Bristol Women’s Karate offers a supportive, women-only space to learn traditional karate without feeling rushed or sidelined. Classes focus on confidence, self-defence, fitness, and wellbeing, welcoming all ages, abilities, and experience levels. Training emphasizes skill, effort, and progression, while fostering a friendly, community-minded environment. You can train in a karate suit or whatever you feel comfortable in—what matters is learning, not clothing. Safety, personal growth, and enjoyment are at the heart of every session.
