Misfits Pageant at The Island
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Whether Nessie, Bigfoot or the Jersey Devil is more your style, get ready to serve cryptid realness for this gleefully freaky extravaganza at the Island raising funds for Queer Youth Art Collective. Celebrating and reclaiming the monstrous in queer identity, expect ghoulishly glam drag, devilish dance battles and a host of DJs supplying the party tunes. In the words of Nancy Downs: we are the weirdos, Mister!"

A clubnight held at The Island on Thursday 29th May. The event starts at 19:30.

This is a night for the queer community—part celebration, part education. We’re raising money for Queer Youth Art Collective, and centering queer joy, gender expression, and community care.

It’s a pageant for the misfits: a space to honour the weird, the monstrous, and the glorious boundaries of queer identity. We’re exploring how queerness intersects with horror and iconic monsters—the comfort in otherness, the power in being unrecognisable, and the beauty in embracing what’s been labelled strange.

Historically, queer and marginalised people have been framed as monsters or threats—and we’re flipping that. We relate to creatures, to ghosts and glam beasts, because we’ve been treated like them. And through that, there’s strength.

Expect crowns, sashes, trophies. DJs, dancing, maybe some performances. Mostly, it’s about coming together and making joy out of survival.

During the AIDS crisis, Dan Savage said—“We went to funerals during the day and danced at night. That’s how we stayed alive .” That spirit still matters. Gathering together in defiance, in drag, in glitter and grief, is a radical act.
