An event held at The Island on Thursday 5th November. The event starts at 13:00.
Quiet Interiors, Loud Realities presents a major retrospective of the acclaimed British figurative painter and Royal West of England Academy (RWA) member Frances Conway-Seymour. The exhibition explores the tension at the core of Conway-Seymour’s practice: her ability to turn intimate domestic scenes into profound commentaries on post-war social structure, gender autonomy, and political transformation.
Bringing together works from her formative student years at the West of England College of Art in Bristol to her late period founding Liverpool's Lark Lane Atelier, the retrospective charts her career-long examination of human life. While her compositions often capture quiet, contemplative spaces—family homes, artists' studios, local gathering places, and private rooms—they reverberate with "loud realities." Her subtle handling of oil and light reveals underlying themes of feminist self-determination, class solidarity, and the changing landscape of 20th-century Britain.
Featuring portraits, social gatherings, urban and rural landscapes, Quiet Interiors, Loud Realities re-evaluates Conway-Seymour not only as a master of figurative realism, but as an artist who recognized that the domestic sphere is deeply political.
