Bristol University's Shakespeare Society presents a bold reimagining of King Lear, exploring the king’s age and madness as a force of destruction across his kingdom. This adaptation blends American patriotic imagery with themes of rising Christofascism, contrasting this with pre-Christian Pagan symbolism. As Lear descends into madness, the world around him fractures into a battle of ideology and power, culminating in a final clash between authoritarian rule and pagan resistance. Cordelia and Edgar embody virtue and antifascism, while Lear and Gloucester’s journeys lead them toward atonement through nature and paganism.
