Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Exoplanet Weather and Eclipses at The Lansdown
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Free entry! Clifton: the final frontier for monthly astronomy brain-ticklers and world class deep space talks. In The Lansdown’s second edition of AoT, Darius Michienzi walks us through the recent solar eclipse, placing it in its proper historical and celestial context, while Dr. Sergeev gives an overview of extreme planetary weather conditions and the challenges facing terraforming."

A event on Wednesday 19th August. The event starts at 18:30.

Hope everyone is excited to learn about astronomy because we are getting ready for our August edition of Astronomy on Tap Bristol!

Our next event is on Wednesday the 19th of August.

Drop in at The Lansdown for a night of astronomy and great company! Our next Bristol gathering features stellar talks from Denis Sergeev, University of Bristol Lecturer, who’ll take us on a Hitchhiker’s Guide to Exoplanet Weather, and Darius Michienzi, University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, telling us about Eclipses: Past, Present, and Future.

Expect great drinks, a fun space‑themed quiz, and prizes that are truly astronomical!

The event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first served basis, so make sure you get there on time.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Exoplanet Weather - Denis Sergeev

Don't panic - the galaxy is full of worlds with truly terrible weather! Winds faster than the speed of sound, rain made of molten glass, and planets where one side never sees daylight. In this talk, I'll be your guide to the strangest climates in the cosmos, showing how scientists use the same computer models that forecast Earth's weather to simulate alien atmospheres light years away. And while the ultimate answer might be 42, the real question is: could any of these worlds host life? Bring a towel.

Eclipses: Past, Present, and Future - Darius Michienzi

Europe will once again, be treated to the cosmic coincidence of a total solar eclipse this August. But why is this event so unique to Earth, and what did observers in the past make of it? This talk traces the history of eclipses, how they came to be possible in our corner of the solar system, what a modern observer should look for, and why the Earth-Moon system is slowly bringing total eclipses to an end.
