Present Tense 2nd birthday: Gwenan at The Love Inn

A clubnight held at The Love Inn on Friday 13th December. The event starts at 22:00.

Two years in and Present Tense feels well and truly bedded into the techno scene in Bristol’s ever-buzzing nocturnal landscape. Memorable sessions from Aubrey, Reedale Rise, Carl_H and many more reach back to one fabled blast off from Joe Ellis and Sam Watson in the cosy basement of the Take Five Café, back in December 2017.

Always committed to keeping things fresh, the second birthday celebrations move proceedings over to The Love Inn, another Stokes Croft institution with just the kind of intimate vibe our sessions are all about. Once again, we’ve dug deep to bring you a stellar ensemble of artists all keyed into the particular strains of electronic music we all love so dearly.

Heading up the night is Gwenan, a DJ whose low-key rise to prominence has been built firmly on the foundations of her impeccable taste. Sure, she has the technical chops to rival anyone in the game, but what makes Gwenan’s sets so special is that sense of otherness in her selections. The well-worn sounds of stripped back house, techno and electro become sprightly, unpredictable delights in her hands, with every track a unique and surprising proposition to get the trainspotters furiously searching for an ID and the rest of the crowd freaking with pure joy. As a resident of leading London party spot Pickle Factory and with gigs from Freero to Tokyo in her travelogue, the now Berlin-based DJ has more than earned her status as a top-tier selector.

Gwenan will be joined by Mikki James, one of the core members of Swansea-based Dogruff crew, As a producer and DJ, Mikki has been pushing stoutly underground sounds in Swansea for the best part of a decade, and her style perfectly aligns with the sonic philosophies at the heart of Present Tense. Elegant, energised and inventive twists on the techno tradition.

On the local tip, we’re also thrilled to welcome Ellie Stokes for her first appearance at Present Tense, fresh off the back of a spot on our 1020 radio show. Ellie has been carving out a niche for herself in Bristol’s club landscape, from regular stints at Motion to her excellent Palette series at The Love Inn, which welcomed the likes of D. Tiffany, Ciel and Kiara Scuro to town. Completing the picture will be Present Tense’s very own Amy Amor, who will no doubt be in extra celebratory mode as her project hits the two-year mark.
