ELEFANTIN at The Mount Without
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"In ELEFANTIN, Cree Barnett-Williams invites Barbie onto the psychoanalytic couch of dance-theatre-satire. Splicing music videos with sketch-show absurdism, this piece peels back 66 years of gendered choreography and asks what happens when the dreamhouse depreciates."

ELEFANTIN

By Cree Barnett-Williams

Dance-theatre-satire explores human hopes of plastic icon:

"I could sell my dreamhouse, move to Switzerland, get fat, grow old and die." - Barbie on turning 60.

Taking inspiration from music videos, advertising and comedy sketch shows, ELEFANTIN looks at female image and expectation, heteronormative and male gaze, female empowerment and aggressive sexuality in pop culture and asks the iconic 1959 Barbie, now 66, how she is and what she really wants for herself.

//

“Elefantin” is full of wit and innuendo [...] Again and again the frozen artificiality comes to an end, the pleasurable, the lascivious seem to break out in the meticulously crafted body portraits of frozen images of women."
