BBC Folk Award winner Ben Walker and Rob Harbron from Leveret offer audiences an evening of spellbinding music and the stories behind it, combining solo sets with a selection of traditional and original tunes played together.

Ben Walker was recently hailed as 'one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world' by Total Guitar Magazine. A BBC Folk Award winner with a passion for putting old jewels in new settings, for bringing together traditional and contemporary music and for playing it like no-one else. His music has been described as 'thoughtful' (Guardian), 'deft' (Telegraph) and even 'legendary' (Morning Star). His first solo EP - The Fox on the Downs - was released in 2018 and reviewed as 'jaw-dropping' (Folk Radio UK) and 'almost obscenely good' (Fatea).

Rob Harbron is a uniquely skilled player of the English concertina, described by the Guardian as a 'concertina wizard' and renowned for his highly individual and harmonic style of playing. He is a member of Leveret (alongside Sam Sweeney and Andy Cutting - both of whom have played at the New Room), and released three landmark albums. Having worked with a wide range of artists including Jon Boden, Emma Reid and The Full English, he is now exploring solo playing with a repertoire that includes settings of rediscovered traditional tunes as well as many of his own fine compositions.

With Bristol Folk Singers:

The Bristol Folk Singers returns to the New Room for our Christmas Folk Special. Formed in 2014 by Matt Norman, they sing for the joy of singing, and perform formally at concerts and festivals and informally in pubs. The group’s repertoire is Matt’s arrangements of traditional English folk songs. Expect to be uplifted and moved by the glorious four-part harmonies and fuguing entries. This is English folk song as you’ve never heard it before.
