APHELION PRESENTS XXV:
Star Turbine (NOR/DNK) + Calcine Trio + Brutar Weimaz + Carter
Monday 12th February 2018 at The Old England

STAR TURBINE (NORWAY / DENMARK)
Thrilled to be bringing these guys back for a third visit to Bristol as they tour the UK once again this February!

Sindre and Claus bring their special brand of improvised lofi noise weirdness to the Old England, this time in support of a brand new album for Aphelion Editions, 'The Great Distortion', the A side of which, appropriately enough, was in fact recorded at The Old England last February!

Expect an immersive and chaotic sonic voyage littered with vinyl and tape manipulations, quirky samples, vintage toys reappropriated for sound abuse purposes and contact mic'd objects with a continuous dialogue going on between the two performers.

Occasional clouds of luscious ambience contrast with moments of oddball humour and all out weirdness. Even the odd snippet of classic rock riffery might filter through the haze once in a while... A heady trip indeed!

BRUTAR WEIMAZ
Long term project of Anthony Brown (Repo Man/Iceman Furniss) and Andrew 'The Hate' Bryan reconvenes for a rare live outing, wielding their guitars like razor sharpened knives, ready for the onslaught. Not for those of a delicate constitution, theirs is an often brutal and visceral attack on the senses, but one worth submitting too. It's not everyday, you get to see wild, free improv like this with acoustic guitars.

Brutar Weimaz are an improvisational guitar duo dedicated to creating a music free from the constrictions of the traditional genre-scopes of the modern music scene. The modus operandi involves spontaneous composition via two guitars, sometimes bass, recorded live, often to dictaphone. The music evokes a bleak uncertainty, with a sparse quality free from the liberating qualities of percussion. It can be stark and lost or brutal and frayed. The two players take inspiration from free jazz, no-wave, extreme metal and avant-classical without letting any of their influences infringe upon the sound-world that they have created.

CALCINE TRIO

Ordinarily a quartet, for tonight's show the Calcine group led by Saxophonist Rebecca Sneddon (Free Nelsonmandoomjazz) will be operating as a trio, dishing out their own blend of explorative and electrifying free jazz cacophony!

"...the Calcine Quartet gave what was perhaps the evening’s most orthodox version of free jazz, wrestling with the dilemma of continuity versus surprise through a properly democratic approach that demanded much of the players in exchange for their musical freedom..." Bristol 24/7

CARTER
Carter is the solo project of Bristol based electronic musician & home recording artist Neil Carter.

In the process of moving on further from ambience, utilising musique concrete techniques, contact mics, found objects and electric motors to create sounds which are then processed through a modular system.
