Last month we began with Lost Highway — a descent into the fractured, nightmarish highways of the American psyche. Tonight, we take a very different road. The Straight Story is David Lynch’s quietest, most tender film. Based on a true story. When 73-year-old Alvin Straight learns that his estranged brother has suffered a stroke, he decides to make the journey from Iowa to Wisconsin to see him. With no driver’s license and failing eyesight, Alvin sets out on a lawnmower, traveling slowly across the Midwestern landscape and meeting strangers along the way. It’s a meditation on time, forgiveness, and the dignity of ordinary people.
David Lynch the humanist: Some critics call this his most “un-Lynchian” film, but others argue it reveals his deepest concerns: reconciliation, mortality, and grace. It’s still suffused with odd, lingering encounters, but here they’re life-affirming rather than unsettling.
The screening is preluded by the musician Fabio Ferri who is a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Bristol. In his solo sets he delivers his own compositions and improvisations that push the boundaries of guitar playing and use of effect pedals, taking inspiration from jazz, electronic music, rock and contemporary classic music. He released two albums and is currently working on a new release, 'Transfiguration' with his recently formed quintet.
