The first Cinéma français event was a success. Thank you to those who attended and for the lovely feedback on your experience. It's now time for the second Cinéma français. This time it's Michel Gondry's L'Écume des jours. Michel Gondry is best known for directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
The setting is Paris, and Romain Duris plays Colin, a young man in love with Chloé, played by Audrey Tautou, who falls ill with a flower growing in her lung. Colin lives with his buddy Nicolas (Omar Sy), a chef, in a converted rail carriage suspended between two buildings, where he works on inventions such as his Pianocktail, a piano that creates cocktails.
Due to Chloé's sickness, Colin spends his fortune on treating her. However as things don't get better, tensions between them flare up and Colin finds himself having to do odd jobs to survive.
I won't write more about the story as it would spoil the plot, however it's worth noting that the director Michel Gondry blends quirky stop animation with a surreal visual style to achieve a childish and unconventional world.
Doors open at 6.30pm allowing time for light social language exchange before the movie begins at 7.30pm. The movie is approximately 2 1/2 hours and attendees are welcome to stay until 10.45pm
