Eleven Magpies / The Rhonetones at The Orchard Coffee & Co

A gig on Sunday 14th May. The event starts at 19:30.

Cuculi Presents an evening with beloved instrumental quartet Eleven Magpies at The Orchard to celebrate the release of their new album 'Two for Joy' (Cuculi Records). Featuring Ian Ross (guitar), Alex Vann (mandolin), Elizabeth Westcott (violin) and James Gow (cello), they share a thrilling gift for collective expression as they deliver Ian's poignant and fantastical compositions with verve and energy. We're equally delighted to welcome Tim & Rhona Dalling in their dazzling father & daughter duo The Rhonetones as support.

We recommend buying a ticket in advance as all our previous shows have sold out. Tickets are £10 (general release), with a low income option (£7) and a community supporter option (£14). Having multiple ticket tiers makes the event accessible to people on different incomes while still making sure the musicians get paid, so please consider which tier is most affordable for you.

ELEVEN MAGPIES

“Intense but effortless… this album certainly gives a feeling of well-being” - fRoots

“...one of the most refreshing albums of instrumental folk you are likely to hear for a long time” - Folk Radio

“The quality of the musicianship is very strong” - Bright Young Folk

Eleven Magpies is a quartet of musicians who met doing theatre. Led by Bristol-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and music director Ian Ross (Wise Children, Kneehigh), the band features Alex Vann (Spiro, Three Cane Whale), Elizabeth Westcott (Yesterday’s Camel) and James Gow (Jow). Together, they chart a whirling journey of plucked and bowed strings, through humorous miniatures and sorrowful madrigal-esque beauty, then up into unexpected flights that come to land in moments of serene stillness. Their first album Eleven Magpies was a collection of tunes written by Ian, reflecting his experience touring in the USA and the UK, and their second album Two for Joy is due for release in spring 2023.

Two for Joy is reflection on grief, faith, and joy. Ian composed the collection over a period of a couple of years, throughout the pandemic, but the main bulk of writing came after the death of his mother in the summer of 2021. Through the music, he was able to explore loss and life, family, friendship and well-being. Two for Joy is about humanity and survival. Beginning with the poignancy of ‘Breath’, it ends in the freedom of ‘Murmuration’, in a return to the earth and into the skies.

The album was recorded by Robbie Stamp at Sandpit Studios in Easton (Bristol) over two weekends, with an assortment of unusual microphones and lots of biscuits.

THE RHONETONES (Tim and Rhona Dalling)

As a guide to The Rhonetones, start by thinking of the calm hypnotic beauty of Martin Hayes jigs then head north via Tyneside music scene to the inspired songwriting style of Michael Marra with a dash of Ivor Cutler then west across the sea to Old Time tunes of North Carolina, and South to the legacy of Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, Randy Newman and the left-field world of Michael Hurley and somewhere in amongst that musical journey you'll find the original songs and tunes of Tim Dalling and Rhona Dalling, a father and daughter who can get lost, of an evening, in hours-long tune sessions in the kitchen, playing accordion, fiddle and banjo. Come and share the life-affirming fun.

About Tim... "Tim is actually the best. And I've done my research" Martin Green (Lau)

About Rhona... "Devastatingly effective" froots magazine.
