FRAN & FLORA

‘a string duo bound for glory’
Max Reinhardt, BBC Radio 3 Late Junction

Fran & Flora captivate audiences with world class performances of music from across eastern-Europe and beyond. Comprising of cellist Francesca Ter-Berg and violinist Flora Curzon, Fran & Flora is born out of a deep friendship, musical bond and shared interests in traditional music, improvisation and sense of adventure. The duos compositions and arrangements stem from the modes and melodies of Klezmer, Transylvanian, Romanian, Greek and Armenian music, as well as drawing on archival recordings. Fran & Flora seek to combine elements of these rich musical traditions with their ever evolving, experimental collaboration.

Unfurl, the debut album by Fran & Flora, was released in February 2019 to critical acclaim. Incorporating tunes and songs collected on their travels, the album was the culmination of three years studio work with producer Sam Beste (The Vernon Spring / Hejira) where they explored their aesthetic, experimenting with interweaving textures and layers, electronics and analogue processing. In June 2020 a 5 track remix EP was released celebrating tracks from Unfurl. Remix artists included Portico Quartet, Deep Throat Choir, Enhang Ha (Berlin), The Yellow House and Dylan Henner which was championed by Mary-Anne Hobbs (BBC 6 Music).

Fran & Flora have appeared live on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour, WorldWide FM, Cerys Matthews 6Music and were nominated for 'Best Live Act' by the AIM Independent Music Awards and Songlines Music Awards.

2022 sees the duo re-grouping to manifest a new body of work to be released later in the year leading into 2023.

BETHANY M. ROBERTS

Bethany M. Roberts is a songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from Bristol, UK. Her voice carries elements of folksong honesty and choral clarity as she weaves melodic lines over intricate fingerpicked banjo and guitar. There’s a hypnotic intimacy in her performance that invites audiences to commune with the quieter parts of themselves, drawn in by her ever-shifting harmonic patterns. She usually writes, plays & sings with dreamfolk trio Hands of the Heron, and performs as half of poetry/soundscape project House of Figs with Beth Calverley. She also produces and releases music as part of community label Cuculi Records, and frequently collaborates with other emerging artists including Ben Osborn, Emily Isherwood and Amy Yon.
