Welcome to São João party, the annual celebration that takes place at the beginning of the Brazilian Winter.
During the entire month of June, night or day, the chords of the accordion, the triangle and zabumbas, can be heard in the Northeast of Brazil.
Festa de São João, also known as Festa Junina, are festivals held in Brazil and Portugal during the month of June to celebrate St. John the Baptist. Although these festivals are held throughout June the main date recognised is June 24th, the nativity of St. John the Baptist. In Brazil the festival falls around midwinter, it is therefore also used to mark the change of season, and to give thanks for the good weather for the crops.
The festivals traditionally also celebrate rural life in Brazil where participants may dress up in the typical clothing of farmers, and the festival will have traditional food and games. There will also be traditional music and dancing, and a quadrilha!
