The People's Comedy formed in 2018 with the aim of platforming grass-roots comedians with a message (think counter-culture, alternative, original) and ensuring that they're paid for their craft.
This gig takes place on Australia Day, the official national day of Australia. It is the day that in 1788, Arthur Phillip first raised the Union Jack flag on Australian shores.
Although Philip was reportedly a staunch advocate of the local indigenous peoples, stating that as people living within a British colony that they were entitled to the same rights as any British person (an issue in and of itself), the act was colonization nevertheless.
To date, there have been over 300 known sites involving clashes with Indigenous people on the continent, resulting in the deaths of at-least 14,000 Indigenous people.
The night will aim to acknowledge this moment in history, whilst taking aim at the deeply unsettling forces that led to it through jokes and funny good times. Start time will be 8pm latest.
