The night will take place on the same day that political activist Olympe de Gouges faced the death penalty in the shape of the guillotine for her progressive & prophetic views in 1793.
De Gouges criticized the slave trade in the French colonies; highlighted gender inequality that initially followed the French Revolution, such as that found in the French Constitution of 1791, where women were afforded no political rights (along with men who could not pay the poll tax, children, domestic servants, rural day-laborers and slaves, Jews, actors and hangmen).
De Gouges reformulated Rousseau's Social Contract, doing away with the gendered conception of "citizen" and better introduced the notion of a social contract between the sexes where, for example, upon divorce, property would be split evenly between the involved parties, and where property could not be seized without reason from women (as it was not seized from men).
She was the only woman during the "reign of terror" to be executed for her political writings, and we remember her spirit on November 3rd.
