A event on Saturday 2nd May. The event starts at 15:00.
Join curator Tanya Martin for an exclusive tour exploring the enduring appeal of Scandinavian design, a movement that began in the early 20th century and continues to influence interiors worldwide. Known for its functionality, simplicity, and minimalism, Scandinavian design draws inspiration from the Bauhaus school and celebrates clean lines, natural materials like wood and leather, and exceptional craftsmanship.
Discover how Ken Stradling, after his first visit to Scandinavia in 1961, became a passionate advocate for this design philosophy. Through his work at the Bristol Guild, he introduced ceramics from Arabia and Rörstrand and glass from Holmegaard and Orrefors to shoppers in Bristol and the South West, helping shape mid-century British homes.
Today, Scandinavian design is admired globally for its timeless qualities:
Modernism – Simplicity – Tradition – Craftsmanship – Functionality – Identity – Choice of Materials – Harmony with Nature
These principles have become universal markers of good design, influencing home décor manufacturers far beyond Scandinavia.
This tour celebrates the legacy and impact of Scandinavian design, how its understated elegance and practical beauty transformed homes in the UK and continues to inspire the way we live today.
