The Wicker Man (Dir. Robin Hardy, 1973)
When a devout policeman arrives on a remote Scottish island to investigate a missing child, he finds himself drawn into a world of cryptic rituals, folk traditions, and unsettling pagan rites. Shrouded in mystery and rich with haunting music and theatricality, The Wicker Man stands as one of British cinema’s most iconic and enduring cult films – a hypnotic blend of horror, folklore, and psychological unease. Starring Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward and Britt Ekland.
“Part folk musical, part occult chiller, and quite mad.”
The Telegraph
“Few films have attained the cult status enjoyed today by Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man (1973). A unique mix of mystery, musical and horror, the film is one of the most eccentric ever produced in Britain.”
BFI
Why we chose The Wicker Man for July’s DVD Club:
The Wicker Man “is hailed among the most influential films of all time” (BBC Culture), inspiring films such as Hot Fuzz (2007, Edgar Wright), Midsommar (2019, Ari Aster), Kill List (2011, Ben Wheatley), and The Witch (2015, Robert Eggers), as well as TV shows like Inside No. 9.
In fact, two of our upcoming shows are highly influenced by the film:
The Mayor & His Daughter: A Genuine Appreciation of Comedy – Thu 17th July
Riddlestick Theatre’s Barleycorn – Tues 5th – Sat 9th Aug
So why not come along to the film, and then come back to see how the shows have paid homage to it!
Get in the mood before the film with enchanting live music from Riddlestick Theatre.
“Their energy is boundless, the script fiercely intelligent and the original live music bound to stay dancing through your head.”
