*Why We Fight for Trans Liberation*

Some on the left and in the workers’ movement oppose trans rights as in conflict with (cis) women’s rights, or as a distraction. We disagree.

As socialist feminists we oppose all oppression as part of our struggle for the working-class revolutionary overthrow of capitalism. The oppression of women — cis and trans — is intimately linked to the oppression of trans, nonbinary, LGBTIQ+, and gender non-conforming people. We champion equality and liberation for all. This means guaranteeing trans individuals’ rights to live as the gender they self-identify as and to access gender-affirming healthcare, eliminating obstacles and discrimination.

Trans rights have been under sustained attack in the UK, from record anti-trans hate crimes in 2023 to the government banning puberty blockers in 2024 to an anti-trans ruling by the Supreme Court in 2025, made worse by the EHRC’s subsequent “interim update” (since withdrawn) and the widespread interpretation of the ruling and update. This threatens trans people’s ability to use toilets, changing rooms, and other gender segregated spaces. It has led to increased harassment of trans and nonbinary people, butch lesbians, and gender non-conforming people simply trying to use the toilet.

These latest attacks were opposed by trans rights organisations, other civil society groups, and significant parts of the labour and trade union movement. Workers’ Liberty activists helped organised the biggest protest against them to date, plus have organised in our workplaces to resist subsequent transphobic policies.

What is the relationship of trans liberation to women’s emancipation? How does trans oppression relate to capitalism? How can we not only respond to immediate attacks on trans people but also win wider trans liberation?

Join Bristol Alliance for Workers’ Liberty to discuss these questions. These meetings are open to all. Discussion and disagreement encouraged.
