QueerTech Bristol: Fortune telling games at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio
See event details

A event on Today. The event starts at 18:00.

Container Magazine and QueerTech Bristol are pleased to host an evening of fun DIY game-making with artist, curator and game designer V Buckenham.

There's a long history of people making machines that can tell fortunes or predict the future. From Magic 8 balls to indie games like Wishfishing, it's fertile ground for experiencing the mystery of technology and providing a space for fun and reflection. And now we're going to join in! Come along to this workshop and we'll explore the history of these machines, and then we'll make one ourselves using Downpour, an approachable game creation tool recently launched by V.

// What you'll need

Bring your a smartphone. You can install Downpour (https://downpour.games) in advance if you'd like.

If there's a particular book or magazine you find resonant and might find it interesting to base your fortune-teller on, bring that along too. You can cut it up and then take photos of it, or you can just take photos of it.

We don't have a sponsor for food for this edition - our organisers will provide a few light snacks - feel free to bring your own refreshments either from the Watershed bar or elsewhere.

// About the artist

V Buckenham is the creator of Downpour, an app that makes it easy to make little games on your phone. Before that, she was the creator of Cheap Bots Done Quick, a website that made it easy to make little Twitter bots on your computer. She's also worked as a game designer and developer on titles like Beasts of Balance and Mutazione, and as a curator with Now Play This and Wild Rumpus.

// Location //

We'll be in the Pervasive Media (PM) Studio at the Watershed. There is step-free access via a lift, but is a bit hidden away in the building, so here’s some directions - if you get stuck ask a member of staff where the PM Studio is:
* Go to the cafe/bar
* When looking at the bar, you’ll see some double doors to the left of it
* Go through these double doors, past the toilets. Follow the corridor further along and there will be a doorbell to ring for the Pervasive Media Studio

We will also be send out contact info before the event so please check your spam folder!

// About the organisers //

This event is in collaboration with, and supported by, the fantastic Container Magazine - an online magazine that takes a human look at technology, exploring how people use it for creative projects, community-building and social justice.

We're generously hosted by the PM Studio https://www.watershed.co.uk/studio/
