An Introduction to Translating Poetry
A writing workshop with Ibrahim Hirsi and Helen Bowell.

Live Streamed ✔

How would you translate a poem? Join poets, editors and translators Ibrahim Hirsi and Helen Bowell for a unique poetry translation workshop, open to all. Led by these facilitators, you'll collaborate with other workshop participants to explore the art of translation, and create a group translation of a poem by beloved Somali poet and songwriter Xasan Ganey. No experience of Somali, translation or poetry is necessary to take part. This workshop is presented by the Poetry Translation Centre, celebrating its 20th birthday throughout 2024.

Online Zoom tickets are also available, limited to 4 per workshop. Please book a ‘Online Zoom participant ticket’ at checkout.

Presented in partnership with Poetry Translation Centre.

Ibrahim Hirsi is a writer, independent researcher, and editorial assistant at Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal. He is currently working on a series of papers exploring the metrics and prosody of southern Somali poetic forms. Ibrahim has been published in The Poetry Review, Modern Poetry in Translation, PBLJ and in the anthology Before Them, We (Flipped Eye, 2022).

Helen Bowell is a poet, editor and producer. Her debut pamphlet The Barman (Bad Betty Press, 2022) was a PBS Choice. She co-directs Dead [Women] Poets Society and on their behalf co-guest-edited Modern Poetry in Translation in Autumn 2020. She edited the first anthology of bi+ poets, Bi+ Lines (fourteen poems, 2023), and is producing the Poetry Translation Centre's 20th birthday programme of events in 2024. Her co-translations have been published in Modern Poetry in Translation and Poetry London.
