Come along to this fascinating and interactive panel and performance at Watershed to confront the key ethical, creative and human dilemmas of the future of poetry and art with the development of AI. For this new project Page Against the Machine, poets have been paired with technology experts and researchers to write poetry against, and in collaboration with, advanced AI. The different versions of these poems will be read aloud, with the audience guessing which ones were written by the poet, by the AI, and in collaboration with AI. There will be a discussion and Q&A with acclaimed poet Deanna Rodger, Lyra’s 2024 Festival Poet shakara, and voices at the forefront of AI and creativity including Michael Marcinkowski.

Deanna Rodger:

Deanna Rodger is a former UK Poetry Slam Champion who has recently written and performed commissioned pieces including ‘Bigger Than Sport’ for BBC1’s Sports Personality of the Year, ‘Black History Matters’ for BBC Sport 2020 and ‘If’ which was read by Serena Williams for International Women's Day 2021. Deanna has over ten years of facilitation experience and has designed long term programs for schools and youth centres such as Active Citizens (British Council and Lyrix Organix), Creative Facilitation Training (Roundhouse) and Black Lives matter homepack (Hamilton Trust).

Shakara:

shakara, a Jamaican-born artist, embodies a fusion of technology and creativity, weaving together poetry, spoken word, and filmmaking with AI. Their journey began amid BLM and Kill the Bill protests, igniting a passion for amplifying marginalised voices. With a profound intention to empower and heal, shakara courageously explores themes of identity, spirituality, and heritage, drawing inspiration from luminaries like Audre Lorde and Miss Lou. They seamlessly blend their academic background with their creative practice, incorporating coding and AI-inspired creations. shakara is intrigued by AI's potential to uplift global majority voices and is dedicated to centering the narratives of black queer women. Eager to be part of Lyra Fest, they seek to celebrate the power of spoken word while exploring the intersection of art and technology, paving the way for technologies rooted in human-based ethics.

Michael Marcinkowski:

Michael Marcinkowski is Director of Education for the Digital Futures Institute and Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities at King’s College London. His collection of poems, Lives of the Saints, is due out in December from Broken Sleep Books.

Presented in partnership with Bristol Poetry Institute.

Supported by University of Bristol’s Brigstow Institute. Special thanks to Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio.
