Events on Wednesday 13th May

“This event will be a conversation between Muslim professionals who deal with end of life and grief, and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. What can faith and religion provide during bereavement? What is the importance of rituals? How does culture help or interfere with grief?”
From: Muslim Perspectives on Grief and Bereavement

“For this session we are delighted to be joined by Professor Margaret Stroebe, a world-leading bereavement researcher based in the Netherlands. Professor Stroebe will be discussing the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement (DPM), a framework to help understand reactions to the death of a loved one.”
From: The Dual Process Model of Grief

“In the first, Grief in Popular Culture: Public grieving and celebrity deaths, Dr Ruth Penfould-Mounce will discuss how the public reacts to celebrities’ deaths. Feeling intense emotions when celebrities die is a noted phenomenon resulting in public displays of grief and memorialization, yet how possible is it to grieve for a person who is well known but not known on a personal level? This workshop will draw on a variety of cases of public grieving for celebrities who have died and will examine how the celebrity dead live on through posthumous careers.”
From: Grief in Pop Culture / Grief in Film

“In 'Gender and Grief', palliative medicine doctor Dr Mark Taubert will draw on his personal observations from years of clinical practice to discuss types of grief. Psychologists suggest that over forty different factors form a complex network for each unique grieving episode, and that an individual’s grief process is as unique as their finger-print on the spectrum between intuitive and instrumental grief. Mark will explore how grief is influenced by gender, rather than determined by it.”
From: Gender + Grief / Grief in Afro-Caribbean Culture

“The first part of this session concerns the creation and legacy of grief and bereavement groups in the UK. Dr John Troyer will discuss the formation of such support groups in the 1970s and 1980s and explores what this can tell us about these same groups today.”
