on Saturday 9th September. The event starts at 13:00.
9th September, 1-3pm
West Street, Bristol, BS2 0BX
(Outdoor space between Clarence Road and Trinity Street)
On the occasion of their 'All About Love' commission, taking over the city's billboard and advertising spaces between 8–10 September, Asmaa Jama presents an outdoor public reading from ‘Except this time nothing returns from the ashes’ (2022) at West Street, as well as a performance from guest collaborator okcandice, a writer, artist-curator and musician based between Birmingham and Berlin, followed by a artist tour of nearby poster sites.
Asmaa Jama’s All About Love commission builds on their film ‘Except this time nothing returns from the ashes’ (2022), made in collaboration with Gouled Ahmed and on view at Spike Island, Bristol until 10 September. Exploring how national canons are constructed and can be corrupted, the film is a documentation of the artists’ interactions with their families' photographic collections and archives, placing emphasis on self-portraiture and its ability to combat erasure.
A selection of photographic stills from the film, captioned with fragments of poetic text, will take over the streets of Bristol between 8–10 September. Featuring scenes where characters face the camera, questioning the gaze of passers-by, the work pays homage to photography and self-portraiture, especially the ways in which communities have archived themselves and their stories.
This event is part of ‘All About Love’, a nationwide billboard takeover commissioned by BUILDHOLLYWOOD, curated by Zarina Rossheart.
