Why did the Soviet Union collapse? at ARC events, 27 Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2HG
See event details

A event on Thursday 5th June. The event starts at 07:00.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall was torn down. Eastern Europe saw regime after regime claiming the title “Communist” being ousted from power sometimes by millions in the streets and revolution. What had stood as the Soviet Union itself collapsed and the Western leaders claimed this as Capitalism’s biggest victory. This meeting will challenge this narrative and will look at the collapse as one in which the failure of the Stalinist states was rooted in Capitalism of a specific form - State Capitalism. The meeting will consider why this question still matters today in terms of political theory and practice.
