Information:

FRANK BOWLING | LAND OF MANY WATERS
Arnolfini celebrates the work of pioneering painter Sir Frank Bowling, in its 60th anniversary year, sharing new and previously unseen work, alongside key paintings from the last decade.

At 87, Bowling continues to explore the ‘possibilities of paint’ with an experimental ethos that places material, colour and light at the heart of his practice. In his first public gallery exhibition since his highly acclaimed Tate retrospective in 2019, Land of Many Waters explores the ebb and flow in his practice between process and the ever-present autobiographical details that hover beyond.

IAN BREAKWELL
Work by Ian Breakwell, a world-renowned artist who played a key role in Bristol’s art scene as a young man. We will reflect on our history with the artist and his time in Bristol as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations in 2021.

Across our second floor, you will find Breakwell's Continuous Diary project, a focus of his 1977 exhibition at Arnolfini, Carry More Home It’s Smart to be Greedy, commissioned by Arnolfini for the digital newscaster outside the Bristol Hippodrome, as part of the exhibition On Site (also 1977), and UNWORD (1969/2003), a film created with Mike Legget from a series of performance pieces of the same name, partly shot in Bristol.

The Reading Room will host a display of material from Arnolfini’s archive, delving into how Breakwell’s work was presented and received in Bristol in the 1970s, supported by responses from young artists working in Bristol today.

GREY AREAS | JESSIE EDWARDS THOMAS
Jessie Edward Thomas has co-designed and co-produced Grey Areas, a photographic dialogue with five individuals with complex needs who are currently within or have experienced the ‘homelessness pathway’ in Bristol.

IMAGINARY LIVING ROOM
The Imaginary Living Room is a collaborative project between creativeShift CIC, Bristol Photo Festival and Arnolfini exploring ideas of home during lockdown.
