A
gig
on Thursday 23rd February. The event starts at 19:00.
A collaboration between Trumpet & Cello duo Pete Judge & James Gow and Trumpet/effects and Violin duo Celeste Cantor-Stephes and Caelia Lunniss. It promises to be a magical evening of live music in the intimate and homely setting of the cafe-laundrette (bringing your laundry is completely optional, but what is more Bristol than to wash your smalls during a gig?)
About the artists...
CIRENNE: Celeste Cantor-Stephes and Caelia Lunniss [Spindle Ensemble])
Earthy, spacey, experimental, klezmer-tinged music for trumpet and violin.
People’s Choice’ vote for Best New Klezmer Theme at the 2022 Bubbe Awards.
Playing new music at the intersection of klezmer, folk, chamber jazz and free improvisation, Cirenne is a singular combination of trumpet/effects. The Bristol-based duo weave scenes and soundscapes that are at once dense, rich and mellifluous, spacious, dancing and angular. Trough music that is both cinematic and playful, Cirenne reflect upon real-world conditions and explore imagined utopias.
JOW: James Gow - cello
Pete Judge – trumpet
as heard on BBC Radio 6 Music
"absolutely stunning" (The Nest Collective)
"trumpet lines of lament & renewal soar gently above earthy cello " (Friendly Records)
"there is no ego to this, just musicians playing organic music. The audience love them" (Bristol 24/7)
JOW's eponymous debut album was released November 2021. Their follow-up EP was recorded in St Ambrose Church, Bristol, released in October 2022, and features a guest appearance by producer/violinist Alex Garden.
Between them, James Gow and Pete Judge are contributors to many musical contexts, from Kneehigh Theatre to BBC Jazz Award winners Get The Blessing, Eleven Magpies to Three Cane Whale, and are both core members of the newly- formed Terra Collective. They also happen to be second cousins (or is it first cousins once removed? They can never quite remember...).
