A event held at Bookhaus on Saturday 20th June. The event starts at 18:00.
Bodies of Sound: Grounding from the Sea of Dreams
On the eve of the summer solstice, join sound artist and Deep Listening practitioner Ximena Alarcón and Irene Revell and Sarah Shin, editors of Bodies of Sound: Becoming a Feminist Ear (Silver Press), with local composer and artist Sarahsson for an evening of discussion, reading, listening and meditation.
Inspired by composer Pauline Oliveros’s call to attend to 'the power of sound! and what it can do to the body and the mind,' Bodies of Sound explores feminist sonic cultures and radical listening. Essays, scores, fiction and reflections echo across different ways of sounding, witnessing and being together. Through readings and conversation, this event explores how sound moves through the body as memory, migration and resonance.
Drawing from Oliveros’s practice of Deep Listening, Ximena Alarcón will guide a collective meditation Grounding from the Sea of Dreams. Inviting participants to listen across thresholds, Grounding from the Sea of Dreams is a ritual to balance our sense of place and the feeling of presence by navigating through dreams, memories and technologies in fully embodied perception. As daylight lengthens towards solstice, the evening opens a space for attunement, reflection and shared presence.
This panel is in celebration of our partnership for Independent Bookshop Week (13 - 20th June). We will have a selection of Silver Press titles for sale to showcase this independent, feminist publisher. Tickets cost £7 and include a glass of wine or soft drink. Presented by bookhaus.
Sarahsson is a composer, lecturer and instrument-maker living in Bristol. Her interests are focused on acoustics , memory and the physical properties of harmony through electroacoustic and spectral composition.
