Dhanveer Singh Brar is a writer, scholar, and teacher based at the University of Leeds, where he teaches in the School of History. His work explores the culture and politics of Black and Asian communities in Britain, the U.S., and the Caribbean, with a focus on music, art, and everyday life.

He’s the author of two books: Beefy’s Tune (Dean Blunt Edit) (The 87 Press, 2020), and Teklife, Ghettoville, Eski: The Sonic Ecologies of Black Music (Goldsmiths Press / MIT Press, 2021); and is currently working on a new book titled Small Talk: On the Corner with Gil Scott-Heron.

‘I’m Gone: Small Talk with DJ Rashad, Gil Scott-Heron and Esther Phillips’, brings together all of this research.

This talk is part of our celebration of Black History Month 2025 which runs throughout the month of October and celebrates the strength, resilience, and achievements of Black communities, while acknowledging the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

'I’m Gone: Small Talk with DJ Rashad, Gil Scott-Heron and Esther Philips' by Dhanveer Singh Brar is part of En Masse’s 2025 Community and Arts Programme. This free-to-attend programme aims to enhance access to creative opportunities in Bristol, empower a diverse range of individuals to pursue creative careers, and nurture Bristol’s independent arts ecosystem by making it more connected and resilient.
