A
gig
held at Bristol Beacon
on Sunday 14th December. The event starts at 20:00.
Featuring some of the finest musicians who work and live in our city, this 16-piece Jazz orchestra is led by Bristol trumpet legend Andy Hague.
This is a special concert to celebrate Andy reaching the ripe old age of 60 years young, so please come along and help wish him 'Happy Birthday'.
The band played last year as part of Jazzata's 40th Anniversary and it was one of the gigs of the year, so not to be missed
Andy's contribution to Jazz in Bristol is immeasurable.
He arrived from Croyden as a baby faced teenager in the late 80s, to go to University where he organised the Uni' Jazz Club while immersing himself in the Bristol Jazz scene.
He rapidly started to form his own groups to fullfill his need to compose music himself. Later he was instrumental in the origins of the Bristol Jazz Workshops and the establishing of the long running Be-Bop Club.
He's guested in many top South West bands and also toured and or recorded with the likes of Mike Westbrook's 'Uncommon Orchestra, Pee Wee Ellis & Fred Wesley, and even rock gods Portishead
The Big Band also features the best quality soloists around; with the fiery Johnny Bruce (trumpet), saxophonists Ben Waghorn & Kevin Figes; the rare trombone talent of Raph Clarkson and possible the best rhythm section in the South West region, featuring the mighty piano playing of Jim Blomfield.
This promises to be a right rip up, to celebrate a milestone birthday....
"Hague's band was superb, relaxed yet focussed, packed with serious soloists, Hague among them, the writing quite spell-binding"- Jazz Journal
"This shows that there is a lot of life in the classic big band format when it's handled with creativity and imagination (and excellent musicianship)". - Mike Westbrook OBE
