Bernstein - Candide Overture
Penderecki - Chaconne
Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 2
Mahler - Symphony No. 5
Last season we welcomed the Warsaw Philharmonic; now, under its erstwhile Music Director, it's the turn of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and it's bringing a little souvenir of home: atmospheric Penderecki's short piece Chaconne.
The contrast with Bernstein's effervescent overture couldn't be stronger, and there's plenty of sparkle too in the little concerto Shostakovich wrote for his son Maxim.
Shostakovich was a great admirer of Mahler and we end with a Wunderhorn symphony that journeys from funeral march, via the exquisite love letter of its iconic Adagietto, to a riot of life-affirming exuberance.
