'One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians' (The Observer)

ART THEMEN is one of the most important musicians in the history of British Jazz. This living legend of a tenor player made his first impact on the scene in the 60's as a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated followed by important contributions to the music of Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick, Graham Collier and Jack Bruce. Then in 1974 Themen began an association with pianist Stan Tracey that lasted for twenty-five years and showcased Themen’s consistently creative saxophone playing in bands ranging in size from quartet and sextet to full jazz orchestra. Art Themen has continued to work at the highest level both in the UK and on the International stage. Having started out listening to the music of Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane, Themen's own individual creative voice is now seen as a major influence on the young players of today.

Art's annual visit to Fringe Jazz is always a highpoint, rated by many the very best evenings we present. Tonight Art will be joined by three master musicians with Huw Warren on Piano, Riaan Vosloo on Double Bass and Bristol's own 'Elvin Jones' the wonderful Tony Orrell on Drums. This is going to be a very special night, don't miss it.
