★★★★ All About Jazz

The playing of the Bristol-based Eastern Strings (Daphna Sadeh Neu and Knud Stüwe) combines classical precision, world music energy and characterful jazz improvisation. Their instrumental music is rich, distinctive and haunting, piecing together a tapestry of musical cultures including Middle Eastern, Klezmer and Ladino.

Here, in its expanded version, the Eastern Strings Ensemble presents a distinctive and exquisite set of Jewish-Turkish songs.

Vocalist Michal Nahman performs in Ladino, a medieval Jewish variant of Spanish and the language of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the late 15th century and dispersed across the Mediterranean from North Africa to Turkey. One of the world's most endangered tongues, today there are fewer than 200,000 Ladino speakers.

This stellar set is elevated further by commanding accompaniment from violinist Jenny Glester and percussionist Ricardo de Noronha.

'Magical, full of surprise and delight.'
