A
clubnight
held at Crofters Rights
on Saturday 17th November. The event starts at 23:00.
Since November 2003, the best before: crew has been putting on parties in Bristol governed by a very simple ethos:
No musical rules. It’s a party – that’s it.
On November 17th, best before: turns 15. To celebrate, we’re gathering together our crew of resident DJs and throwing a celebratory blowout at the Crofters Rights.
The Kelly Twins, Andy Payback, Richard Carnes, Legendary Tone and “the chief cellar dweller” himself, Sell By Dave (AKA music journalist Matt Anniss) will be digging deep into their vast record collections to unearth cuts to play with one sole aim: to make you “dance like you mean it” (another of the event’s numerous slogans…it made sense at the time).
So what’s the story behind best before:?
In short, it was launched at a time when Bristol had plenty of nights focused on bass music, breaks, hip-hop, funk and soul, but very little else. There were very few nights playing house, disco, techno or boogie, nothing vaguely Balearic, cosmic or Italo-disco influenced, and just one regular event – the mighty Seen – pushing all things jazzy and polyrhythmic. best before: dared to be different by joining the dots between these styles and more, playing obscure, little-known gems and well-known hits side by side. If a record was great and made the dancefloor move, it would get played.
Over the years that followed, original resident DJ and party founder Sell By Dave was joined behind the decks by an expanded line-up of regulars who shared the same ideals, all of whom would go on to make an even greater impact in Bristol and beyond with their own events and record labels (and, in the case of Chris Farrell, who will sadly miss this anniversary event, the mighty Idle Hands record shop and label).
Alongside the crew of resident DJs, best before: brought similarly minded “headline” guests to Bristol. Versatile Records boss Gilb’r (as Chateau Flight), Greg Wilson, Rune Lindbaek, Al Kent and Horse Meat Disco all made their first Bristol appearances at best before: events, while other headliners included Chris Duckenfield (numerous times), the Unabombers, Kevin Andrews and Elliot Eastwick B2B, Brooks, Jimpster ,Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy. There were naturally loads of local DJs who came and rocked the party, too, including Placid, Christophe, James Small and Paul Walker (Eat The Beat), Suisse Toni, Nick Harris (pre-A Sagittariun), Al Dare, Bernie and James L and of course Five-Stylez, who would go on to found Bedmo Disco with Sell By Dave. In fact, the first time they played together was at the first ever best before: party in November 2003, which was headlined by Sheffield DJ Chris Low Life (his party, Lights Down Low, was an inspiration in the early days).
From the start, the most important people in the best before: story were the dancers: regulars who shared the party’s aims and came to have a great time. We’re hoping some of the original regulars, as well as newcomers, will head down to the Crofters to come party with us one more time.
