WORKSHOP
This two hour workshop is an opportunity to find out a bit more about what we do and learn one of our dances and its accompanying song. Molly is an energetic, stomping dance with simple steps, so don’t worry if you have no Morris or dance experience- if you can get from one side of a room to the other at a fast walk, you should be ok. Wear sturdy footwear with ankle support if you can, or trainers, clothes you can move in and bring water. Drag of any kind is strongly encouraged!

Tickets are pay what you can, we suggest a donation of £5-15 but if funds are a barrier to attending please contact as at [email protected] and we'll sort a ticket for you.

The workshop will be held at St Annes Church Hall, St Leonards Road, Eastville, Bristol BS5 6JN. The hall is around the back of the church, to the left if you are facing the main church door. There is step free access to the hall and two steps down to the toilets.

WHO WE ARE
Molly No-Mates is Bristol’s premier queer, drag king Molly dancing team. Molly is a form of Morris dancing that gets its name from the tradition of featuring a man wearing a dress and apron- known as the Molly. The word ‘Molly’ has been used since the 18th century as both a slur and a self-adopted term for a wide range of queer identities, so this is a Morris dancing tradition with queerness in its DNA.

Molly No-Mates dance without bells or hankies, accompanied only by a singer and the sound of our stomping feet. We are all traditional Morris dancers or folk musicians who wanted to create something that honoured those traditions while also expressing our personal and political queerness, so you won’t find us dancing to songs of maidens ruined or the power of true-heteronormative-love’s first kiss. We are working on finding the queerest folk songs out there, writing our own songs and dances, and queering the Morris in every way we can.

e-SIMS FOR GAZA
Since October 2023, communications infrastructure in Gaza has been utterly destroyed, leaving people reliant on e-SIMs for internet access to communicate with each other, with the outside world, to work, or to study. The majority of images and videos you’ve seen from Gaza have only made it to your screen because of ESIMs. All proceeds from the workshops after covering hall hire be used to purchase and maintain ESIMS which we distribute via Connecting Humanity. We'll be collecting donations for them throughout the day.

PLOUGH SATURDAY DANCE CRAWL
Molly dancing is traditionally associated with Plough Monday in early January, when ploughs would be blessed to mark the start of the agricultural year. We don’t have a plough but we do have THE PLOUGH!

We'll be starting at the first venue at 2pm, before dancing our way through Easton till around 5pm. We'll do a roughly 30 minute dance spot outside each venue before stopping in to warm up and have a drink. Keep an eye on our instagram @mollynomatesmorris if you need help tracking us down on the day. Workshop attendees are encouraged to join us and may have the opportunity to dance out, so please dress for an afternoon outside in January!
