"Klezmer-inflected chamber folk majesty for cello and nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed harp). Benjin
combines 800 year old British folksongs with Bach, dense jazz improvisations and sound collages; evoking the poignant melancholy of Renaissance sitting rooms in 21st century Bedminster. "

A
gig
held at Friendly Records
on Sunday 4th December. The event starts at 19:30.
A final show of the year in the loose programme of explorative chamber folk evenings at Friendly Records. Very excited to welcome multi-instrumentalist benjin from London to usher in December with a celebration of his beautiful new album. Opening the evening will be the delightfully wandering trumpet & violin duo Cirenne. Come and share in an evening of rich new chamber music drawing on classical, folk, improvisation & klezmer music.
benjin is a multi-instrumentalist, artist and storyteller who has toured and recorded across Europe with a number of experimental music ensembles over the last 20 years. His work has also been featured on BBC Radio 6 and Radio 3, and at the Serpentine and Tate Galleries. The latest collection of benjin’s solo music – an album composed of works for Cello and Nyckelharpa – was released on cassette in Autumn 2022 by Canigou Records.
'Music for Cello and Nyckelharpa' is a musical conversation between these two instruments, drawing from both of their European history & repertoire. benjin's compositions and arrangements gently frame meeting points; a Bach violin sonata and free form jazz improvisations sit next to the Swedish lament ‘Vem Kan Segla Förutan Vind?’ (Who Can Sail Without the Wind?) and the Abbotts Bromley Horn Dance, a British folk song which can be traced back to the 1200s.
Cirenne are Celeste Cantor-Stephens on trumpet & Caelia Lunniss on violin & viola. Celeste is an exciting collaborator bringing a classical charge to free improvisation & experimental music making. Caelia is a member of the renowned quartet Spindle Ensemble whose filmic, poised minimalism has graced many stages including Bristol's St Georges.
