Late Call w/ Davis / Grigg / Kelly / Marino / Minton at Friendly Records

A gig held at Friendly Records on Sunday 5th March. The event starts at 19:30.

The inaugural night in the new series Late Call. Shows are announced with a week's notice. Improvised & new music, agile programming & spontaneous audience attendance.

Opening the night will be the duo of Matthew Grigg & Jo Kelly (guitar & double bass).
This will be followed by the trio of Matt Davis / Luigi Marino / Phil Minton (trumpet/electronics, percussion & voice).

All players have been celebrated on the improv scene, Bristol & way beyond, for many years and have explored fertile ground with their respective instruments & collaborations so it's a real pleasure to welcome their musical adventurism to Friendly.

Matt Davis has been active in improvised music since the mid 90’s, playing throughout Europe and Japan in many different collaborations and small and large group ensembles including Zeitkratzer and La Sospechosa dance company. From 2003 he has directed ‘Field’ - a live art/performance project and has collaborated with geographer Doreen Massey.

His sound/music work continues to include acoustic improvisation and textural, sound based pieses on trumpet and preparations. Along side this is an electromagnetic set up: performance based improvisations which use electromagnetic fields from custom-built cracked electrical devices and field recordings of electromagnetic residue and interference, as well as drawing on the immediate situation/space of the performance.

Matthew Grigg is an influential guitar & amplifier explorer who has generated a lot for Bristol's improv scene. Matthew has ran many nights and collaborated extensively with artists such as EP/64 & Tina Hitchens, Dominic Lash & the Scratch Orchestra Revisited.

Phil Minton is an improvising vocalist whose 'extended techniques’ can be as unsettling as they can be mesmerising. His vocals often include the sounds of retching, burping, screaming, and gasping, as well as childlike muttering, whining, crying and humming; he also has an ability to distort his vocal chords to produce two notes at once.

Luigi Marino is a much travelled musician now based in Bristol. A deep listener and collaborator, his work explores live environmental networks between human and nonhuman actors with a particular interest in the effect of applied intuitive actions upon pre-existing conditions. He is an active improvisor performing on both electronic media and percussion, especially zarb and bowed custom cymbals.
