Following her superlative sell out gig at FRINGE JAZZ in February we're really pleased to welcome back the extraordinarily talented South African singer Sisanda Myataza. Probably best known in Bristol as the singer with the excellent Afro Beat band Mankala, for tonight's performance Sisanda is joined by two very special guests, both major names on the current British Jazz and World Music scenes, the award winning saxophonist SAM CROCKATT and the brilliant drummer DAVE SMITH (Robert Plant, Cloudmakers and Fofoulah). The band also features one of Fringe Jazz's favourite musicians the keyboard wizard Anders Olinder, the great French bass player Guillaume Ottaviani and Lorraine Mango on backing vocals. This is going to be a wonderful evening of South African Jazz infused songs, stories, thoughts and poems with elements of protest art.
The impact and influence South African Jazz had British Jazz in the late 60's and 70's was immense with the arrival of a group of brilliant musicians who fled the Apartheid regime and set up home in exile in London. Musicians like Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Mongezi Feza, Harry Miller, Brian Abrahams, Ernest Mothle and Johnny Dyani made a major contribution in the development of British Jazz and their influence can still be heard in today's music.
Sisanda represents the new generation of African musicians bringing their influence to European Jazz and while having tremendous knowledge and appreciation of South African, British, European and American Jazz she brings with her the the new contemporary sounds of African music including Xhosa Jazz and Soul, Soukous and Sungura. Sisanda's music is a fascinating fusion of South African Jazz with influences of Hip Hop, Nu Soul and R&B.
This is a gig not to miss.
