COCK N BULL KID BIO
CocknBullKid has made a couple of important transitions recently. First, she's changed her name, dropping the pronoun (she's CocknBullKid, not The CocknBullKid). And secondly, she has emerged from a creative cocoon with a suite of bright, breezy and ultra-colourful pop songs that exist at least five giant leaps away from the savvy, autobiographical electro tunes like'On My Own' that got her a slot on Jools Holland even before she signed to Island Records. "The music I made at first was cool, but it was work in progress. There was only so far I could take it. I knew I was capable of more. I wanted to make music that reached people further than E9, or whatever the cool postcode is now. "
It's been worth the wait. The 25 year old Hackney resident, aka Anita Blay, is in possession of the most interesting, credible pop record of the year. It is a joyful celebration of everything in Blay's life: the teenage depression; the colourful confusion of her Catholic-turned-Pentecostal upbringing; her Ghanaian uncles and their hi-life band in Accra; and her insistence that her songs should turn negative emotions into high-saturation pop songs that will turn the FM dial kaleidoscopic when they inevitably perform a massive ambush of the charts. Adulthood has lush strings, twinkling marimbas, steel drums and a brass band and an insatiable appetite for incessant hooks. It sounds like Kate Bush, were she dancing on cloud nine and insisting that you dance too. Others are taking note too: lead single'Hold On To Your Misery' has been championed by R1s perennially on-point Huw Stephens as well as the NME and Popjustice. "I knew I wanted the album to be really musical. Everything now is so minimal and I wanted to make something I could listen to in ten years time. I didn't go to a gig for a year, I didn't read music mags and I didn't listen to anything new. I plugged into The Buggles, Enya, The Beach Boys and The Polyphonic Spree and listened to how they created a sound. And that was it. "
SCANNERS
THE STORY SO FAR , , Scanners were first formed 5 years ago when Sarah and Mat, bored of playing guitar for other people started writing songs together. They performed all over London for about a year armed with just a guitar, tambourine and drum machine. When it left them at the end of 2005 citing musical differences the first Scanners had to find a replacement fast. Having decided to use only'real' people in the future they found what they were looking for in the shape of Amina and Tom. Amina took on the job of keyboards and guitar, Tom the drums. By now Sarah and Mat had a large collection of songs and badly wanted to record them, so Scanners got in a rehearsal room and put together what was to be there first album'Violence is Golden'. It was recorded in London, mainly in Mat's bedroom, with the guitars and violins annoying their flatmates and neighbours (some of whom can still be heard if you listen closely). The album was self-produced but they had some help with the mixing from Sarah's boss Stephen Hague, veteran producer of acts such as New Order, Blur and Pet shop boys amongst others. They would later ask him to help them produce their second album, 'Submarine'. By a strange twist of fate LA based Dimmak Records boss Steve Aoki heard one of the tracks through the magic of the internet and arranged to meet up with the band on a trip to London. After a meeting and a visit to rehearsal he declared his desire to release'Violence is Golden' out in the States. And so it was that the album was released on the 6/6/06 to much critical approval from people such as Perez Hilton, Aversion and the LA Times. Scanners spent several months touring the West Coast supporting bands like Datarock, Forward Russia, the Horrors and the Rakes. They got to check out LA with the Dimmak crew who always know where there's a party, usually because its theirs. They were also really well received at the SXSW festival where a talent scout for NBC saw them perform and asked them to play on the'Carson Daly Show' which goes out coast to coast in the US. Ice Cube introduced them onto the stage Their music has been played on many hit American shows such as'Gossip Girl' , 'Entourage', '90210', 'One tree hill' 'Human Target' and'Life'. Mat also appeared in the hit show'Law and Order' but not for very long. Their single'Lowlife' was also used in the motion pictures'Mamma's boy' and'Endgame', a story about apartheid in South Africa. The song'Raw' was featured on Channel 4's'Fashion Rocks' and was a hit with EA gamers ice hockey fans. 'Violence is Golden' was released in Europe over the next few years and Scanners toured the UK, and Europe headlining and also supporting people like'Devo', 'Air', 'The Charlatans' and'Juliette Lewis'. They played at festivals such as'Rockness' in Scotland to'Eurockeenes' in France and headlining the Musik-Schutzgebiet Festival in Germany, having a good time almost everywhere along the way. Their wierdest gig was one of their first when they played to an audience of just Tim Burton and two friends. They were also asked to play a special one off gig for the renowned TED conference which they like to think reinforced their reputation as an'intelligent band'. In 2008 they started recording their second album in between tours. They asked Stephen Hague to help share the production work this time to help them develop their sound. He got them into Real World studios to record the drums and then it was back to the'Bedroom' studio and the shed at the bottom of his garden for everything else. Finally at the beginning of 2009 the album was mixed and mastered. Due to circumstances out of their control the second album titled'Submarine' was delayed by a year. It was finally released in the States in early 2010. Scanners signed a publishing deal with Bug Music in 2010 and are now holed up in East London writing songs for album 3.
