UGLY DUCKLING
While there is some debate as to the exact origins of the group, most historians agree the the members of Ugly Duckling, Andy Cooper, Dizzy Dustin, and Young Einstein, first crossed paths in a small village just outside Jakarta in early 1927. Einstein, one of the world's most prominent relic hunters, had been in the area for months as part of a massive excavation effort aimed at uncovering artifacts from the 4th century Hindu kingdoms. One of just a handful of pilots considered skilled enough to handle the Boeing F2B, Dizzy was among a small group of American aviators who sought work flying precious cargo missions in Southeast Asia following the war. Andy had been in the area numerous times in the previous years while serving as a special agent for the armed forces under then president Calvin Coolidge and was thought by many in the miliatry to have been captured.
Dizzy and Einstein were the first to meet. Einstein's excavation team needed a skilled pilot who they could trust to deliver rare artifacts back to their base in Nepal without encountering any colonial entanglements. When Dizzy's services were recommended by a fellow explorer, Einstein sent word for Diz to meet him in a local saloon just before sundown to discuss the details. A few months later, Einstein and Diz were at their usual rendezvous point planning the next mission when they noticed they were being watched by a stranger seated alone in the back corner of the saloon. Concerned that he may be a spy, they approached the stranger and questioned him as to his motives. "I'm in need of transportation, " said Andy. "I understand you gentlemen know how to move through the world undetected. " Convinced he wasn't a threat to their operation, they decided to help Andy escape.
After helping Andy gain safe passage back to the West, the three agreed to meet in California later that year. Diz knew of a quiet beach town where they would leave the dangers of their past behind and try to find work in entertainment. Living in the shadow of Los Angeles, the trio was able to hone their skills and quietly develop the audacious and exciting style that would later bring them to the forefront of a burgeoning music scene. After years of circling the globe and cultivating a loyal fan base, the group continues to make classic hip hop records with the singular purpose of keeping alive the music they love. Their ability to thrive and stay fresh in an artform that has largely become stale can be attributed to an uncommon dedication to their craft. It remains to be seen if history will ever catch up to the incredible legacy that these brash adventurers have set forth.
THE SCRIBES
The Scribes are a new wave hip hop four-piece formed in 2002 consisting of co-lyricists Ill Literate and Loki Steele, beatbox maestro Lacey, and turntablist Kenny Hectyc, whose unique talents have combined to make a much heralded sound quite unlike any other.
The Scribes debut, The Evolution EP, was released in 2004 on CD, Vinyl and iTunes through independent label Unsung Records, and the resulting tour saw them play Blade's album launch at Cargo in London, and headline events from The Metaponto Beach Festival in Italy to student unions and nightclubs across the UK.
The Scribes first full-length album, 'The Sky is Falling', was unleashed in 2008 to high praise from a variety of media, both local and national, including The Metro, BBC Radio, Music Week Magazine, 24-7 Magazine, Venue Magazine and Hip Hop Connection.
The album pushed the limits of hip hop to almost breaking point, both musically and lyrically, showcasing the group's trademark sound featuring traditional hip hop samplying as well as live instrumentation, a far cry from the stereotypical loop based'bling and gunz' fraternity.
The 14-track LP is available on I-Tunes, Spotify, Play, Amazon and all major online outlets as well as retailers across the UK.
The group have performed extensively across the UK and Europe with artists such as De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan's GZA, Annie Mac, Example, Pendulum, Plan B, Prof Green, Goldie, Chipmunk, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Jurassic 5's Akil, MF Doom, Foreign Beggars, Ugly Duckling, Magnetic Man, Souls Of Mischief, Westwood, Stereo MCs, Chase and Status, RA the Rugged Man, Macklemore, Dels, Estelle, Wiley, Roll Deep, Phi-Life Cypher, Skinnyman, Mr Thing, Ray Keith, Ed Case and MC Lars, and have provided original music for BBC and Channel 4 television programming.
2012 will see the release of'A Story All About How', a sonically challenging 16 track album that thrives on a perfected blend of poignant lyricism bolstered beautifully by a backdrop of constantly evolving instrumentation.
Their newest material promises to be a defining release for The Scribes and the face of UK hip hop, having already been well received from Ibiza to Camden's prestigious Jazz Cafe to the group's stand-out performances at Glastonbury Festival and Beach Break, earning the group a mention in NME's'Glastonbury Guide' and Venue Magazine's'30 best live shows at Glastonbury Festival'.
The Scribes are one of the most talented up and coming artists on the scene and are hotly tipped to'step up to the big league at any time', their genuinely unique sound is something you really have to hear for yourself, with appeal ranging far beyond the traditional hip hop fare, and is backed up by live performances proven to move any crowd.
