A event held at The Ill Repute on Sunday 21st June. The event starts at 19:30.
“I’ve done so much wrong to perform this miracle.”
This weeks edition of Fistful of Film’s All the Colours of Giallo series takes a step back from the Giallos to look at the films which influenced them. Our pick, the Italian-French co-production ‘Eyes Without a Face’.
Pierre Brasseur (Le Quai des brumes, Les Enfants du Paradis) is Dr Génessier, an obsessive plastic surgeon riddled with guilt after a reckless car crash disfigures his once beautiful daughter, Christiane, who outsiders believe to be dead.
Dr Génessier is the leading researcher in what he calls ‘heterografting’, the practice of transferring tissue from one person to another. The downside of this procedure is that it requires both participants to be alive…
In his isolated suburban mansion, he experiments on dogs and birds. But with the help of by his loyal assistant Alida Valli (The Third Man, Suspiria), Génessier embarks on a new quest, the search for the right face to fit his daughter.
Eyes Without a Face was France’s response to the success of the Hammer Horror productions, with Georges Franju (the co-founder of Cinematheque Francaise) tasked adapting the novel of the same name. The result, a terrifying masterpiece of French film, a must watch.
