Take a journey with us to Virgil, Texas...
On Thursday 7th August, Be Kind Rewind Bristol returns to the basement of The Ill Repute for a special screening of David Byrne’s beautifully bizarre 1986 cult classic, True Stories.
Part musical, part mockumentary, part surreal love letter to the quirks of small-town America, True Stories is a film like no other. Directed, co-written and narrated by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne — in a series of bold Western outfits and gentle, bemused voiceover — the film drifts through the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, where we meet a cast of delightfully oddball residents preparing for a celebration of “Specialness.”
True Stories blends deadpan satire, visual poetry, and absurd Americana into a strange and sweet cinematic experience. It’s a film that gently pokes fun at consumer culture and modern alienation — but always with warmth and curiosity.
• Doors open from 7pm – film starts at 8pm sharp
• Free entry – no ticket needed. No admission when all seats are filled.
Bring your friends, grab a drink, and let us take you on a weird and wonderful journey to a town where everyone’s just a little bit... special.
