Nick Mulvey

“Can we see the sacred in the ordinary?” This is the question Nick Mulvey asks in ‘Begin Again’, his short film about exploring grief and ancestral connection in the music he’s been making during the global Coronavirus pandemic. At the end of 2020, in anticipation of his third album due for release this year (2021), Mulvey released the Begin Again EP as a way of reaching out during this difficult time. He says, “The recordings I made were meant to be demos, and I didn’t expect them to be actually released, but as the crisis then unfolded and affected us all, I felt that I actually had something to offer my listeners.” Mulvey has been spending time delving into his family history, connecting to a grandmother he never met while also tracing lines between the resilience of human beings in crisis and the natural world in recovery.
The depth of enquiry into what is sacred to Mulvey is a clear thread that runs through the sonic creations of this twice Mercury Prize nominated artist. From his 2014 debut album ‘First Mind’ which dealt with instinctive healing and the subconscious, to his 2017 sophomore album ‘Wake Up Now’, which protested the twin human sufferings of the refugee and climate crises, Mulvey has been celebrated for his exceptional musicianship and humane intelligence. His uniquely textured sound results from blending the influences of great singer-songwriters such as Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell with polyrhythmic traditions from Cuba and West Africa and the electronic minimalist soundscape of artists like Brian Eno and Steve Reich.
Having built strong career foundations as a young artist via a deep dive into ethnomusicology through his music studies in Spain, Cuba and at SOAS in London, Mulvey went on to gain critical acclaim as the hang drum playing member of Portico Quartet, signing with Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records and gaining a Mercury Prize nomination in 2008. As a solo artist, now with two albums and a second Mercury Prize nomination under his belt, it is clear Mulvey is maturing into an exceptional artist with a depth of skill and knowledge that allows him to push his sound in multiple directions. His new music reaffirms his dedication to exploring the human condition in sonic form, reaching back into the distant past to find out how we can continue into the future.
On his quest to express hope for the human spirit amongst global chaos, Mulvey explains, “I suppose the idea of ancestral connection can be seen as a journey of personal integration. When we actually release our feelings we are able to kind of see the world afresh. New possibilities are made available to us when we release this energy and we can go forward in ways we couldn’t see before. These are definitely times of grief and wonder… [with] everything changing, what is really important is revealed to us.”
