The John Martyn Project at Jam Jar

A gig held at The Jam Jar on Saturday 6th April. The event starts at 20:00.

Featuring Blythe Pepino, Kit Hawes, Pete Josef and Sam Brookes - This is a special project where four artists come together to celebrate the music of John Martyn. Each brings their own story and connection to John’s music which adds to the fabric of the overall experience of the project.

In the wake of a special sold out show at the Jazz café in London to celebrate the music of John Martyn, “I cant bare the thought of not experiencing that again” said Sam Brookes singer songwriter, everyone in the 6 piece band agreed and so the John Martyn project was born.

Blythe Pepino
Pepino’s roots as a leftfield genre-bending songwriter, Mesadorm draws influence from contemporary electronic passions like Caribou, Grizzly Bear and Sylvan Esso, as well as from great female songwriters Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush. Their writing sits somewhere between the domestic observation of Suzanne Vega and the powerful, elemental other-worldliness of Bjork.

Kit Hawes
Kit has fond himself working alongside artists including Seth Lakeman, Afro Celt Sound system, Yola Carter, Mad Dog Mcrea, Sheelanagig and Roni Size to name a few but what unites them is a passion for folk music.

Pete Josef
Pete Josef has always been a soul boy at heart, but his Multi-instrumental skill’s have led him into some interesting situations. He has for years been recording and playing live with with D&B legend Roni Size and Reprazent, and fronts and co-produces the lo-fi house duo White Lamp with Darren Emerson (underworld). He spent the summer season of 2014 on tour as bass player and guitarist in Kelis’ live band, gracing the stages of UK’s Glastonbury festival and Jools Holland, Splendour in the Grass in Oz, and Fuji Rock in Japan. Whilst in this time also working on his debut album, Pete has been busy collaborating on some exciting dance productions. He co-writes and sings on Alex Barcks summer sizzler, Spinning Around, Sascha Braemers club smash For You, and more recently on Comixxx’ deep masterpiece, Broken Connection. The dance features keep coming in, and inform a sprinkling of electronic sounds in his originals. As album two is already bubbling in his mind, his focus now will be his new live trio, which fuses all his soul, world, dance and jazz influences into an exciting mix for stage.

Sam Brookes
In 2011 his eponymous debut Album saw him named as Sunday Times ‘Breaking Act’ and his independently released follow up Kairos was picked as one of the best albums of 2014 by The Independent. Considerable streaming success and support slots for the likes of Willy mason, Scott Matthews and Joan Armatrading have earned Sam a dedicated following and growing anticipation for his third album.

“With his keening tenor vibrato sailing effortlessly into the upper register, there’s something of Tim Buckley about Sam Brookes” - Andy Gill - The Independent

John Blakeley & Jon Short
A rhythm section that have played alongside each other over the years in variations incarnations such as Sheelanagig, Yola Carter and No Go Stop.
