Baka Beyond at The Jam Jar

A gig held at The Jam Jar on Thursday 8th October. The event starts at 19:00.

Baka Beyond are on the road promoting their new album, Sing the World Awake. For over 30 years they have been blending African and Celtic music with a hint of psychedelia to create a unique form of dance music.

Inspired by the Baka Pygmies of Cameroon, Martin Cradick and Su Hart were deeply moved by the Baka's music during their first visit to the Cameroon rainforest, The Baka believe that there are "spirits" who live in the forest who like to dance with people. They see the purpose of music to encourage these spirits to come and dance, and make problems disappear.

To create this magic on stage Martin and Su are joined by Amadou Diagne (Senegal), Ayodele Scott (Sierra Leone) and Kibisingo Douglas (Congo), bringing the authentic African groove, with fiddler Ben Moneypenny bringing the Celtic flair. Ellie Jamison weaves her voice with Su’s over Martin’s intricate guitar completing the spell.

Twende (meaning lets go in Swahili) is events company based in Bristol pushing music from all corners of the world. We work alongside a charity based in Kenya called EKO (Educating Kenyan Orphans) that runs a school in Nairobi providing vital Education for young people in the area. A percentage of our profits from every gig we do is donated to the Charity.
