A gig held at The Jam Jar on Wednesday 29th November. The event starts at 19:30.

Two master musicians come together in an award winning collaboration that strips down to the essence of reverberating blues & the uplift of Southern Italy’s lively pizzica & taranta dance styles. Exploring a deep fascination with ancient trance rhythms, the duo won Best Fusion Artist in leading world music magazine Songlines 2022 awards and their debut album Still Moving was reviewed by The Guardian as a ‘thrilling & spontaneous set’.

Their sound is flowing movement: Justin’s amplified guitar strut boogie frequently dances around Mauro’s soaring violin. Folk songs from Italy & America alongside original pieces draw on the aching longing & lament we find in blues, spirituals & work songs as well as the uplift and renewal.

Together they have travelled across many international festival stages and most recently they were a Guardian highlight at WOMAD with a “virtuoso set” with Justin Adams being celebrated as a “remarkable guitarist”. The duo's dynamic intensity - Saharan desert blues interweaves with the sound of the Maghreb and wild rhythmic folk dances from Puglia - reaches electric heights in the live setting.

Justin Adams needs little introduction; he has been Robert Plant's sideman on lead guitar since the early 2000s and the new creative highs of his most recent collaborations are fuelled by a breadth of experience from the early days of Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart to his production roles in groups such as Tinariwen, Rachid Taha & LoJo as well as releasing three brilliant albums as dynamic duo JUJU with Gambian griot Juldeh Camara and many other projects.

Mauro Durante is a singer, violinist and percussionist best known as the leader of the influential & long running traditional ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, celebrated for their performances of contemporary Pizzica, an ancient Tarantella music and dance form from Southern Italy. Mauro has also notably worked with contemporary popular classical pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi.

Opening the evening will be The Singers of Dovetail with a song showcase of global roots music.

This will be a very special performance as a quartet of singers from Bristol's Dovetail Orchestra present folk & traditional songs from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kurdistan & Turkey.

Dovetail is about bringing together different traditional sounds, interweaving the roots and identities of everybody in the group. Tonight you'll hear songs of love and loss in Kurdish, Turkish, Bangladeshi and Farsi, accompanied by a west-eastern mix of guitar, baglama and percussion.

The Dovetail Orchestra is a music group for refugees and people seeking asylum in Bristol and the weekly rehearsals provide an essential meeting place for friendship through making music. The orchestra is a mixed ability group directed by Jonathan James and a core Dovetail ensemble with the aim of encouraging everybody to express themselves and learn new skills together.

A vital part of Bristol's grassroots musical community, Dovetail welcomes donations, including instruments.

Regulars of The Jam Jar may remember Justin’s triumphant packed show on a dark November last year with Gnawa master Mohamed Errebbaa so expect a similar uplifting glow and musical vitality.

As always, it’s a privilege to platform such travelled & rich musicianship.
