Local theatre company, The Kelvin Players, are presenting The Effect next month.
Written by Lucy Prebble (Secret Diary of a Call Girl and ENRON), this funny, moving and surprisingly human play explores questions of sanity, neurology and the limits of medicine.
The production, which will take place at their Gloucester Road studio, follows their recent critical success at The Tobacco Factory with Anne Boleyn.
The play follows two young volunteers – Tristan and Connie – who have agreed to take part in a clinical drug trial. Succumbing to the gravitational pull of attraction and love, however, Tristan and Connie manage to throw the trial off-course, much to the frustration of the clinicians involved.
Director, Mat Rees explains why he chose the play: “The Effect is a wonderfully warm, witty and intelligent play that touches on some really interesting themes. So often intelligent plays that explore themes of science lose their humanity, but this doesn’t. It remains down to earth and believable.
“It asks questions about what people consider love to be, and touches on ideas of fate, loyalty and the inevitability of physical attraction. It has its dark moments, but also contains some brilliantly funny dialogue.”
Featuring scenes of a sexual nature, drug-taking, strong language and smoking, this is sure to be a dynamic, immersive experience not to be missed.
The Effect runs at the Kelvin Studio on 253b Gloucester Road, Bishopston BS7 8NY from Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 October at 7:30pm.
