Fuck The Fuckers!
Come and stick two fingers up at the patriarchy at the Restless album launch with Viv Gordon + The Joans, an anarchic, appropriately furious, lyrically driven 5-piece punk band making noise about the politics of survival. Powerful, raw, and honest, Restless is a rage-fuelled and radically optimistic reclamation of space for survivors, using the unstoppable force of the restless sea as a metaphor for the power of collective resistance.
“We will not kneel to the patriarchy
To a world built on our submission
We will resist - cos it’s 1 in 6
We’re not waiting for your permission.
Drip, drip, drip.
Each drop is a tiny bomb going off.
Non-compliance.
Get on the battlebus.
Come and give a fuck.
We’re oppositionally defiant”
Viv Gordon’s direct lyrics and melodies are fused with intricate compositions from co-producers and co-composers Tom Johnson and Quinta combining old-school punk grit, contemporary layered sampling, soaring violin solos, indie grooves, folk melodies, spoken word - and a sea shanty.
Viv Gordon + The Joans are frontwoman Viv Gordon, Quinta (backing vocals; violin, samples/electronics, keyboards ) Tom Johnson (guitar, violin, accordion, kora, banjo, backing vocals), Sean Randle (drums & percussion), Maddy Kiley (bass guitar) and Jim Barr (bass on She Walks...)
Restless is the first album from Viv Gordon + The Joans and is grounded in Viv Gordon's personal journey as a child sexual abuse survivor. A visceral, uncompromising 12-track album recorded at J&J Studio in Bristol with sound engineer and co-producer Jim Barr. It launches at the intersection of fifty years of British punk and five decades of CSA survivor activism. Viv Gordon is an artist and activist whose work sits at the intersection of performance, music and social justice.
