Owing to the financial climate and the extremely high costs of using a large new venue, we've had to scale back our show on August 19th - this will now be an evening show featuring Newen Afrobeat, Memo Pimiento and La Bomba DJs. We think this will be a superb opportunity to see the Chilean afrobeat masters in an intimate setting, and look forward to seeing you there...
La Bomba presents Newen Afrobeat (Chile) and Memo Pimiento (Mexico/Belgium)
Since their formation in the heady pre-pandemic days of 2018, the La Bomba team of John Stapleton (veteran Bristol DJ and promoter) and Boom Operator (Hip hop head turned Latin music devotee) have hosted parties across Bristol and DJed across Europe with their unique blend of vintage afrobeat, highlife, cumbia and latin funk, all played exclusively from original vinyl 45s and LPs.
Newen Afrobeat is a 13-piece Chilean orchestra that makes music inspired by the legacy of the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. With a particular Latin stamp, Newen unify the African rhythms with a colourful and energetic staging, embedded in a deep social message that talks about their roots and social movements in their territory.
With a 10-year career, four albums and 8 international tours under their belt, Newen have performed on important stages such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, WOMEX, Africa Oyé, and Felabration Lagos, becoming the most played afrobeat artist in the world and a recognised exponent of the world music scene.
Newen Afrobeat is more than a simple orchestra, it is an experience of music, dance, and social awareness.
Memo Pimiento is a psychedelic cocktail of synths and latin rhythm, a fusion of the latin american cumbia culture root (peruvian chicha, mexican sonidera, colombian cumbia and argentinian villera) and european electro music (synthpop, krautrock, industrial) with a psychedelic hint.
